RAFTER
MOUNT SNOW FENCE TECHNICAL GUIDE
TRA-Mage's
Rafter Mount Snow Fences have been designed to attach to
the sides of a rafter, and can be used on all types of sloped
roof systems.
For optimum assurance that your rafters can support the
snow load, check with a structural engineer. You will need
to know the snow load, roof slope and snow fence location.
The general rule of the deck mount placement is to install
one row of snow fences at the eave over the plate line,
adding additional rows up the roof every 15' when the eave
to ridge length runs over 20'. An engineer should be consulted
to determine that each snow fence will hold specific load.
It should be noted that snow fences are designed to stop
upper-layered snow and ice from sliding off a roof. Snow
brackets should be used to stop other snow and ice movement
on roofs. Note: Snow fences do not stop ice dams from occurring.
Please refer to the NTRMA and WSRCA manual for proper roofing
application in heavy snow areas.
INSTALLATION
It is easier to install the R-1 Snow Fence before the roof
sheathing is installed. The first row of snow fences should
always be over the plate line. Place the bracket so that
the 1/2" lag bolt hoes line up in the center of the
side of the rafter. The holes are made for a 3/8" bolt
diameter. The length of bolt needed should be determined
by the rafter thickness and the nut and washer. To keep
the bracket lined up with the holes for snow fence pipes,
run one pipe through the previous bracket installed to the
new one. We recommend that the snow fence be installed 16"
to 24" on centers. An engineer should be consulted
to determine that each snow fence will hold each specific
load.
Install the sheathing tight around the 1/4" plate steel
R-1 bracket. It is our recommendation that ice and water
protector membrane be installed from the roof sheathing
up the bracket at a minimum of 3". Seal well. This
needs to be done when temperatures are above 40 degrees
F.
In applying the roofing product, step shingles should be
cut to fit around the snow fence penetration. The top of
the step flashing should be caulked as you would caulk a
surface mounted sheet metal reglet.
Slide the pipes through the holes in the R-1 bracket. The
pipes are 10' long and are threaded on each end. Connect
at the coupling. Install rows up the roof as needed.
